Mosaic Tree's range of baby hats are for new born up to 6 months. However, Annie at Mosaic Tree recently made an exception for a baby who's been modelling Mosaic Tree hats since she was born and, in fact, sported the prototype for all that are now stocked in the online shop.
This wee lass has worn and worn the hats until she's out grown them. She recently celebrated her first birthday and Annie knew that her mother would be delighted if Mosaic Tree could produce something a bit bigger.
Of course, we were more than happy to oblige (Mosaic Tree waves fairygodmother's wand on cue!) and here's what we created.....something that is such a limited edition that its not even in the shop!
We also wanted to make sure that this hat lasts for as long as possible so we introduced the 'double roll' turn up which means that mum can simply unpick the stitches securing the roll and - voila - baby's hat has magically grown by several centimetres, making both mum and baby very happy indeed!
I'm forward planning here for - gulp - Christmas! - did I really say that?!
I have several male relatives to buy for this Christmas. I thought I'd try something different this year - swapping Mosaic Tree items with other crafters' products for Christmas gifts! I'm looking for items £5-£15 and will happily swap my same price items (more than one to bring it up to the equivalent value if need be). Each person would pay for their own p&p.
Check out the photo albums at www.facebook.com/MosaicTree to get an idea of what I create - and prices (and a selection of Mosaic Tree products) are at www.folksy.com/shops/MosaicTree.
Please message me on facebook (www.facebook.com/MosaicTree) if you're interested and have some ideas for swaps (don't worry if all the possible swaps don't work out - I've got to bear in mind the personal tastes of the gift recipients). I'll keep folks posted of any swaps via Mosaic Tree blog.
Fans are already starting to camp out at the Guildhall in Bath in preparation for meeting M-Tree Ted when he makes a rare public appearance at the Mosaic Tree stall in Bath on 16th July 2011. The event? Its Darling Vintage & Artisan Fair - the only thing which should be in everyone's calendar this month!
The Mosaic Tree blog team managed to track M-Tree Ted down for an interview. They caught up with him relaxing at his home in Somerset. Here's what he had to say......
Hi MTree Ted. How did you get involved with Mosaic Tree?
I first got involved about a year ago. Up til then, I'd spent most of my time chillaxing with the other toys at home but I had reached the point in my life where I was looking for something more. One day, Annie (one of the Mosaic Tree crafters) was looking for a model for the baby hats. I volunteered and havn't looked back..
Describe a typical day when you're modelling for Mosaic Tree.
I'll arrive on set early and always start the day with a cuppa. Usually I'll be booked for a 9am make over. I'll then spend half an hour or so with Annie and the photographer going through the baby hats to model, suggesting poses, checking out the best shoots etc. After a quick break, we'll then get down to it. We'll usually be finished by lunch time. I then have a chat with the fans that have congregated - most of them I've met on line through facebook (www.facebook.com/MosaicTree) but its always nice to meet people face to face.
What's the best bit about modelling?
Its got to be the great places that I get to visit on location. There are some fantastic historic sites across Somerset. I guess that I enjoy getting up and having a sense of achievement at the end of each day. Also, a percentage of the proceeds from some of Mosaic Tree's hat sales are given to the Albert Kennedy Trust, a charity that helps homeless/vulnerable young people.
Any advice for other aspiring Teddy models?
Go for it - only you can make your dreams come true.
Thanks for the interview M-Tree Ted.

Wee Willy Winky is back - in this gorgeous stripey hat and not his nightgown as the nursery rhyme goes! This new design came into being when a customer asked me if I could do one of my rainbow hats in this style. Cue for me to start a pattern search. One kind knitter on www.knittingforumhelp.com made the helpful suggestion of basing it on a santa hat. I found a pattern, knitted the prototype (odd looking for santa hat patterns in June but they're out there on the internet all year round!) and then adapted the pattern for mark two - the genuine article!
Naturally, I'm delighted with the result. The only challenge was the pom pom to finish it off. Now I've made many poms in my time - but not since my school days. I thought I'd try the new fangled method of doing it just using my hands - no cardboard cutout circles. Hmm, that was less successful - so I reverted to the cardbord circles which have stood the test of time.
Happy to take custom orders for these - please get in touch to discuss your requirements.
